happy almost half a decade....

four year anniversary couple nights ago...

wore the j.crew. abstract rose print dressto dinner at blue duck tavern. didn't really take pictures of ourselves...yeah i might have had too much to drink. this was not because i am a lush but for two totally different reasons.

1. our server in the bar area while we were waiting poured us HEAPING glasses of the brut rose we ordered.

2. we overestimated ourselves. two glasses of champagne and one bottle of wine USED to be a perfect amount of alcohol for us...but we couldn't even finish it. i felt nauseous halfway through our bottle of the steele pinot.

so about dinner and the restaurant....i read the yelp reviews of people gushing about what a great place it was....def wasn't that wonderful. the decor is nice i guess. sleek, clean, modern. lots of great elements. i especially loved how a lot of things were enclosed in glass. the bar area is BEAUTIFUL...the dining area is not. there are THREE different wood tones in the ugly dining room. which i guess could work but two of the tones are too similar...wasn't really impressive. i think that was the entire tone of our dinner. when we first got to the restaurant the hostess was reeallly sweet and took us to wait in the bar area. where we had a glass of celebratory champagne while we waited. our server there was also very gracious. when we were seated in the main dining room...our server was REALLY awkward. another them of the evening: bar area>dining area. we really should've just stayed there.

so the yelp reviews also led me to believe that portion sizes were huge and that we should not get more than one main meat....uh that's wrong. (we should've been warned when the server asked if we wanted just one order of the braised beef) we started off with the pumpkin custard. served in a creme brulee form with huckleberries on top. at first it was pleasant enough with the creaminess and the crunchy crust and nice acid pop of the berries....and then i kept eating it and was kind of turned off. the custard tasted too much like butter and not enough like pumpkin or that egg-y custardy-ness. def a lot better with the pound-cake like bread they served with it. basically the size of a ritz cracker...the custard was the size of my face, and there were only three piece of bread.....:/

had the fries, the grits, and the short ribs. fries were too fat and nothing extraordinary. grits were too goppy and didn't taste like cheese really. and the short ribs were like any other short ribs and actually served kinda lukewarm. i was really looking forward to dessert (their home churned ice cream!) but at this point i really wanted to go home.
